33 charged with DUI in weekend crackdown

CLEVELAND - The Georgia State Patrol, working in conjunction, with the White County Sheriff's Office conducted Traffic Safety checkpoints, in various areas of White County, Saturday evening.

According to Captain Jim Couch, White County Sheriff’s Department, the purpose of these checkpoints were Driving under the influence and seat belt enforcement and were coordinated by Sergeant First Class Dean Allen, Post Commander of the State Patrol Post in Gainesville. The  effort involved Troopers from Posts located in Blue Ridge, Toccoa, Cumming, Athens, as well as the Gainesville Post.

Checkpoints were setup as a result of local citizen's complaints, of traffic offenses occurring in these targeted areas. Captain Couch, said there were no major problems and that there were only minimum delays for motorist.

White County Sheriff Neal Walden reported 67 citations were issued, that included 33 for Driving Under the Influence, 2 for Felony drug possession and 2 for Misdemeanor drug possession. The cooperation between these two agencies, according  to Sheriff Walden was a great example of the effort to keep our local citizens and visitors, safe.
