DAWSONVILLE - An 11-year-old boy who died Friday night after accidentally shooting himself in the head during a hunting trip earlier in the day has been identified as John Wayne Corcoran of Dawsonville.

Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden says Corcoran died Friday night at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. The shooting was just before 6 p.m. Friday in the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area.

The firearm season for hunters begins Saturday in Georgia, but state officials say Friday was a special adult-child hunt where children under 18 can hunt with an adult.

Corcoran was hunting with his grandfather at the time of the accident.
