JASPER -- Make no mistake, Johnson High is celebrating its first win of the season thanks to its defense.
The Knights shut down Pickens on Friday night in Jasper, allowing the Dragons just 93 yards of offense in a 10-0 victory.
Johnson's offense played well when it had to, getting a field goal from Chris Henry and a touchdown run from Tevin Arthur -- both in the first half -- for an early lead. But it was the Knights (1-3) defense that ensured the lead held.
EJ Wright led the way with six tackles for Johnson, while Caleb Jackson added five stops. Several other players tied with four tackles each in a physical contest.
The Knights pounded out 192 yards of offense, most of it coming on the ground. Mantevius Rucker paced the Johnson rushing game with 75 yards on 22 carries. Arthur also added 43 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Josh Foster managed the offense well, maintaining control of the ball.
Henry started things off well for the Knights, connecting on a 28-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead in the first quarter.
Arthur added to the advantage with a 20-yard scoring run in the second quarter.
Johnson will play host to Flowery Branch next Friday in Oakwood. Pickens (1-2) travels to Chestatee.
