LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Charlotte Knights swept the Gwinnett Braves in a doubleheader at Gwinnett Stadium on Monday night, winning the first game 4-1 and the second 4-3. The G-Braves and Knights split the four-game series.
Gwinnett dropped to 75-56. Thanks to Durham’s 3-2 win over Syracuse, the G-Braves’ lead in the International League South division shrank to 2.5 games. Charlotte improved to 61-69.
Despite pitching a strong sixth in which he retired the Knights in succession, Buddy Carlyle was charged with the loss after Andy Cannizaro scored on a fielding error by Brian Barton. The run later became earned when Michael Restovich singled off Luis Valdez.
Kelvin Jimenez earned the win for Charlotte by holding the G-Braves scoreless in the sixth inning. Jon Link picked up the save by doing the same in the seventh.
Restovich led Charlotte with two RBI on three hits in Game Two. Josh Kroeger was 2-for-4 with a run.
Gwinnett only managed six hits in the loss, with Wes Timmons leading the way with a run and an RBI on a 1-for-3 night. Canizares was also 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
GAME ONE:
Jake Peavy, making his third rehab start for Charlotte, earned the win in the first game. Peavy held Gwinnett scoreless in five innings to even his record at 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA. It was the first Triple-A win in Peavy’s career.
Stefan Gartrell had a pair of RBI doubles to lead the Charlotte offense. Gartrell also scored twice in the win. Tyler Flowers was plated on each of Gartrell’s doubles and was 1-for-1 with a walk. Keith Ginter picked up an RBI with a single in the third inning.
Gwinnett starter John Halama was tagged for all four runs and the loss in game one. Halama is now 4-6 with a 4.61 ERA in 14 games with the G-Braves.
Gwinnett and Charlotte will take a day off before resuming play against each other in a three-game series at Charlotte. Gwinnett will send RHP Todd Redmond (9-6, 4.02 ERA) to the mound in the series opener. Charlotte is scheduled to start RHP Jack Egbert (6-9, 4.70 ERA). First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
