GREENSBORO, N.C. -– Three Georgia Tech juniors –- running back Jonathan Dwyer, wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and safety Morgan Burnett –- were named to the 2009 preseason All-ACC football team announced Wednesday.
Dwyer, who is seeking to become the league’s first two-time Player of the Year since 1992 and ’93, led all candidates with 41 (of 44) votes. Dwyer averaged 107 rushing yards per game as the Yellow Jackets quickly adapted to coach Paul Johnson’s spread option offense last season. Dwyer was voted the ACC Preseason Player of the Year earlier this week.
Thomas, Tech’s best receiving threat since Calvin Johnson, had 39 of the Yellow Jackets’ 74 pass receptions last season.
Burnett, a second team All-American in 2008, ranked among the nation’s leaders in interceptions last season with seven.
Three players topped the defensive honorees with 34 votes apiece: Burnett, Duke defensive tackle Vince Oghobaase, and Florida State linebacker Dekoda Watson.
Virginia Tech led the way with four selections overall. Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Clemson had three selections each.
