5 Hall students named honors scholars

By Ken Stanford Editor
GAINESVILLE - Five Hall County high school seniors are named Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholars for 2009.

They are Kiersten Sapp of Chestatee, Michael Young of Flowery Branch, James Bellamy of Johnson, Tyler Johnson of North Hall, and Brittney Farmer of West Hall.

Each high school in the state is allowed to nominate only one student each year, and those students are judged, based on academic achievement and demonstrated promise of future success (SAT, GPA and an essay). This year 20 scholarships were awarded in the 9th Congressional District and Hall County captured 25 percent of them. Additionally, the system was five for five: all five of the young people nominated by their respective high schools were selected.

Each will receive a $1,500 award (renewable for up to three additional years) to be used for tuition costs at any college they choose to attend (with the exception of our military academies).
