CORNELIA - An Alto man is recovering from a gunshot wound in jail after leading police on a chase through Habersham County Tuesday.
Sheriff's Col. Greg Bowen said a deputy tried to stop a pickup without taillights driven by 40-year-old Milon Ray Jackson about 1:30 a.m., but Jackson fled along Chase Road in Cornelia.
"During the pursuit the vehicle turned into one of our patrol cars at The Torch which is a church here in Habersham County," he said.
Bowen said as Jackson attempted to run over one of the deputies, another fired several shots striking the suspect. He said the truck kept going through another churchyard and off an embankment. He said Jackson then continued to flee on foot.
"The Hall County Sheriff's Office came up with some officers and a canine unit and assisted us with finding the suspect," said Bowen.
He said Jackson was arrested without incident. Bowen said Jackson refused medical treatment and was booked in at the Habersham County Jail.
