OAKWOOD -- Johnson High School Principal Damon Gibbs announced Thursday that Kory Bays has accepted the position as head girls’ basketball coach at the school to replace Coach Ron Smith, who recently resigned to pursue a career in the ministry.
The Lady Knights went winless during the 2008-09 season.
Coach Bays has eighteen (18) years of coaching experience at both the high school and college level, and has assembled an overall record of 174-90. His greatest success was during his seven years as head coach at Warner Southern College (now Warner University) in Lakes Wales, Fla. He led the Warner Southern team to a Final Four appearance one year and an Elite Eight in another in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. He was also twice named Coach of the Year in the NAIA. In addition the team won two regular season conference titles and two tournament conference titles.
A native of Cutbank, Montana, Kory Bays played college ball at Montana State University in Billings. He and his wife Jennifer have two daughters -- five-year-old Taylor and two-year-old Kaitlyn. The Bays family resides in Flowery Branch.
Coach Bays’ official confirmation awaits Hall County School Board approval; the Board next meets in regular session on April 13.
