GAINESVILLE – A Gainesville resident is temporarily displaced after an apartment fire Saturday evening.

The blaze broke out in a second floor unit at the Carrington Park apartment complex off of Dawsonville Highway.

“The tenant was cooking with grease and left the stove unattended,” Gainesville Deputy Fire Chief Jerome Yarbrough said.

Yarbrough said the building’s sprinkler system extinguished the fire. He said the apartment suffered minor fire damage and moderate water damage. The apartment below on the first floor also was damaged by water.

With the time change this weekend, fire officials remind residents to change the batteries in their smoke detectors.
