Man dies in Pickens Co. standoff
By Staff
NELSON, Ga. – A four-hour standoff Saturday night in Pickens County ended in one man’s death.
Police responded to a domestic disturbance call around 6 p.m. When officers arrived, family members told them the man had a gun.
“He was in the bedroom underneath some sheets,” Sgt. Jay Baker said. “He confirmed that he had a gun, and then as (the officers) were backing out, they heard a gunshot go off.”
Baker said the man fired at police, and a standoff ensued. The family was evacuated to safety, and SWAT teams surrounded the home.
Police said after about four hours, the man committed suicide.
