ATLANTA - Gov. Sonny Perdue returns to Georgia today facing another problem with the Department of Transportion. The DOT board chairman resigned Thursday, saying he wants to pursue a romance with the department commissioner he helped put in office.
Mike Evans says he and Gena Abraham have developed a relationship that they ``both want to be more than just professional.'' (See separate story).
Abraham was chosen by Perdue to lead the troubled department. She has been at the helm for just five months. She declined to comment after the board meeting, disappearing into her office with Evans.
There was no word on Abraham's job, which pays $175,000 a year. A special board meeting is scheduled for Monday.
A spokesman for Perdue said the governor would reserve comment until returning today from an energy forum in Texas. Last week, Perdue announced he had authorized an outside audit of DOT after a preliminary study found that that the state has promised about $1 billion more in transportation contracts than it can afford.
State Rep. James Mills of Gainesville says it's crucial that Evans' post be filled as quickly as possible. (See separate story).
