GAINESVILLE - A false alarm, literally, happened at the post office on Dawsonville Highway Monday afternoon.

Gainesville Police Chief Frank Hooper said employees of the post office heard a beeping coming from the trash can and called police.

"The GBI was able to identify through an X-ray that this was a smoke detector that was wrapped up in a bag," Hooper said.

Dawsonville Highway was closed from about 1:30 to 3 p.m.
