WASHINGTON - Democrats on Capitol Hill are accusing the Republican governors of Alabama, Florida and Georgia of leaving their states unprepared for another dry summer by failing to work out a water-sharing compromise.
The criticism came at a congressional hearing Tuesday on the continued regional drought. Democrats urged the governors of the three states and the Bush administration to recommit to negotiating before winter rains taper off.
Congressman Hank Johnson, a Georgia Democrat, said the continued uncertainty over water supplies is making citizens anxious and could drive away businesses. He called the recent breakdown of the governors' negotiations ``unacceptable.''
