OAKWOOD - The longtime director of adult literacy at Lanier Tech is retiring. Lamar Gailey has served in the post since 1989 when the literacy program was transferred from the state Department of Education to the state Department of Technical and Adult Education.

Prior to 1989, Gailey was Director of the Literacy Program at Pioneer RESA in Cleveland, which served 13 counties in northeast Georgia. He was honored at a reception Wednesday afternoon at Lanier Tech.

Lanier Tech President Michael Moye says Gailey leaves a "very big pair of shoes to fill."

"He has made a tremendous difference in the delivery of adult literacy services within our eight county service area and has, in fact, personally touched countless lives of individuals who wanted to better themselves with an education,” Dr. Moye said.

Linda Barrow, Vice President of Instruction at Lanier Tech, noted “with his focus on providing language instruction and GED preparation in churches, prisons, industrial facilities, and to the public, Lamar has turned the Adult Literacy program at Lanier Tech into a model program for the state."
