Communications in the mountains of northeast Georgia could be getting a boost thanks to a state grant, one of several announced by Gov. Sonny Perdue and the OneGeorgia Authority. The state Board of Regents will meet in a specially called session Wednesday to vote on slashing college budgets, increasing health care costs to employees and hiking student fees. Georgia voters are returning to the polls today to decide one of two unresolved U.S. Senate races that Democrats need to win for a 60-seat majority impervious to GOP filibusters. There are two other statewide races on the ballot and some local races around the state, as well. Stock prices are seeing sharp declines after last week's winning streak. Orders to U.S. factories for big-ticket manufactured goods plunged in October by the largest amount in two years as manufacturing was battered by the overall economic weakness. There was also a decline in the number of new jobless claims. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters has announced that Georgia will receive a $110 million federal grant to help reduce Atlanta's notorious traffic and improve transit. Included will be the creation of High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes on I-85 in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. Authorities have identified the man that was killed in a Tuesday morning traffic accident in Forsyth County. A hearing was held Monday in Winder on Barrow Regional Medical Center's attempt to halt construction of a new hospital near Braselton by Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Asian markets rose sharply Tuesday as investors regained some confidence after a strong overnight showing by Wall Street and the U.S. government's bailout of banking giant Citigroup. European markets, which soared Monday, opened lower. Georgia lawmakers will soon consider a measure that would ban teenage drivers from texting and making calls on their cell phones while driving -- and suspend the licenses of violators found at fault in accidents.
