  • Lanierland boys: West Hall captures first-ever title
    The smile on West Hall boys basketball coach Warren Sellers’s face Friday night was as wide as the Grand Canyon. And for good reason. The Spartans had just completed something no other West Hall boys team had been able to accomplish in its history. They won their first-ever Lanierland Tournament title with a 72-58 win over arch-rival Johnson at the Gainesville High gym.

    Gainesville girls basketball coach Manson Hill said he has seen some great performances in his time from Mahogoney Hudson to Tasha Humphrey to Kita Waller. He can add one more to his list after watching junior Jaymee Carnes dominate East Hall in a 55-40 win 55-40 Friday night in the finals of the Lanierland Tournament at a packed Gainesville High gym.
  • Lanierland: GHS wins 'strange' showdown with East Hall
    Any other time over the past 49 years just the mere mention of a Gainesville-East Hall matchup in the Lanierland Tournament would require Fire Marshall approval to get into the gym. But Tuesday night’s showdown was like no other before. For the first time in the tournament’s history the two teams met in the consolation round after first round losses.

    The final score Tuesday night showed Lakeview Academy 41, Johnson 25. But for the Lady Lions basketball team, it meant a lot more than just a win over a Hall County opponent. It was the first-ever win for Lakeview in the annual Lanierland Tournament.

  • Lanierland girls: Gainesville, Flowery Branch move into semifinals
    The Class AAA No. 3-ranked Gainesville girls basketball team turned up the defense in the third quarter outscoring Chestatee 12-3 en route to a 52-42 win in the first round of the Lanierland Tournament Saturday. Flowery Branch also advanced with 31-22 win over West Hall in the other first round game Saturday at the North Hall gym.
  • Lanierland boys: Lakeview, Johnson heading to semifinals
    For the third straight year Lakeview Academy will be heading to the semifinals of the Lanierland Tournament after knocking off Flowery Branch 79-63 Saturday night in the opening round of the boys bracket. Johnson also advanced to the semifinals after beating Chestatee,71-62, in the other opening round game saturday. North Hall and West Hall advanced on Friday.
  • Lanierland boys: North Hall stuns defending champ East Hall; West Hall beats Gainesville
    North Hall knocked off six-time defending Lanierland Tournament champion East Hall 98-84 Friday night while West Hall sent Gainesville into the conslation round with a 75-68 win Friday night in the first round of the 2008 Lanierland Tournament at the North Hall gym. The two teams will meet next Friday in the semifinal round at Gainesville High School.
  • Lanierland girls: East Hall, North Hall girls advance to semifinals
    It will be a rematch between the East Hall and North Hall girls basketball teams next Friday in the Lanierland Tournament. Only yhis time, the two teams will meet in the semifinal round. East Hall pulled away late to beat a scrappy Lakeview Academy team 44-31 while North Hall rallied in the second half to beat Johnson 59-47 at the North Hall gym.
  • Basketball: Falcons rout Buford in season opener
    The Flowery Branch boys basketball team outscored Buford 38-5 in the second and third quarters to beat Buford 70-29 Tuesday night in its home opener.
  • Basketball: Lady War Eagles fall at buzzer
    North Oconee hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to beat Chestatee 48-47 Tuesday night.
  • Lady Saints fall to Lincoln Memorial
    North Georgia led by as many as nine points in the first half, but fell 76-64 to the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
  • Basketball: War Eagles rout Landmark in Lanierland tune-up
    The Chestatee boys basketball team tuned up for the Lanierland Tournament with a 76-43 win over Landmark Christian Tuesday night at the Chestatee gym.

    Matt Ryan, Michael Turner and the rest of the Atlanta Falcons defeated the Chargers 22-16 on Sunday.
  • No. 3 Sooners make BCS case; whip Cowboys
    Sam Bradford threw for 370 yards and four touchdowns, cashed in on a 1-yard touchdown plunge after setting it up with an end-over-end flip, and Oklahoma made a case for a BCS bump with a 61-41 win Saturday night against No. 11 Oklahoma State.
  • Vols send Fulmer out with win over Kentucky
    As Phillip Fulmer exited the field for the last time as Tennessee coach, fans chanted his name, the game ball was thrust into his hands and he was hoisted to the shoulders of his players. Fulmer would have preferred not to be saying goodbye, but at least he got a send-off he'll never forget.
  • Basketball: Chestatee boys get emotional win over Gainesville
    The emotional desire to win a game for their grieving assistant coach was almost too much for the Chestatee boys basketball team to deal with Tuesday night. Almost. The War Eagles used a 12-4 run in the final 1:23 to finally catch and then hold off a scrappy Gainesville squad 66-62 at the Chestatee gym after trailing the entire game until then and by as many as 14 in the first half.
  • Basketball: Lady Elephants rally to beat Chestatee
    The Chestatee girls basketball team had everything going its way for 30 minutes Tuesday night against Gainesville. Unfortunately there are 32 minutes in a game. Gainesville outscored Chestatee 7-0 in the final two minutes to pull out a thrilling 39-36 win at the Chestatee gym.
  • Warren leads Charleston Southern past Toccoa Falls
    Former Gainesville High standout Jamarco Warren scored 28 points to lead Charleston Southern to a 107-78 win over Toccoa Falls on Saturday night.
  • Clemson edges Charlotte
    K.C. Rivers scored a go-ahead layup with 43.2 seconds to help Clemson beat Charlotte 71-70 on Saturday night.
