So, now we have our nation’s highest elected officials saying “I know nothing”. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says “I know nothing about Benghazi, and “what difference does it make?” The subjects of President Obama’s three current scandals are not a surprise. Benghazi comes from a middle east foreign relations failure. The IRS scandal from using raw government power to intimidate opposition. The Associated Press and James Rosen incidents come from an attempt to control the press. For the short term, the IRS and Benghazi events are probably the most damaging to America. We have just gone through an amazing few days in this United States of America. First it was revealed that we-the-people were lied to about the loss of our ambassador and three other Americans at Benghazi … lied to in the midst of a political campaign because our President and Secretary of State wanted us to believe we had already won the war on terrorism. It was in 1924 that Nicholas Murray Butler, President of Columbia University, welcomed a group of new immigrants as American citizens. Here is what he said... Our memory of 9-11-01 has grown dim. Many of our young people have never seen the great buildings on fire, the second one being hit, one collapsing, then the other. The American media has chosen not to run those images; too gruesome, they say. The Economist, which I consider the best business magazine in the world, had a great cover story about America the other day. The title of the story was: “The America That Works” and the sub-title said “The competitive surge that even Washington cannot stop.” Let me give you some highlights from this in-depth story. Now that it’s out in the open … The city and county Dads are trying to decide what to do with the Red Rabbit, which reminds me of a suggestion I got from a listener about a year ago. I’ll try to report it the way I heard it and reported it then: “They are not likely to shut the Red Rabbit down,” this person said. “So if they are serious about providing a ride for people who need a way to get somep The Democratic National Committee makes no bones about it … they have a campaign targeting the Tea Party folks as bigoted, uneducated, redneck, dangerous and radical. Listen to them, and listen to the mainstream media echo them, as they attempt to demonize anybody who dares side with the Tea Party on anything. When and where did we get the idea that the purpose of a business is to do jobs for government that serve society … The local Republican Party held an important meeting last Saturday. I really thought it should be the lead story in our local media, but it wasn’t to be found. You see, every two years the GOP reorganizes from the ground up … not just locally, but all over the U. S. Open to one and all, this was the Hall County Republican Party’s reorganization meeting. Does it ever occur to Washington the heavy burden they place on every small business in America by making them the unpaid tax collectors for the Internal Revenue Service? I am always amazed about how the Founding Fathers could foresee problems our democratic Republic would face. One problem noted by George Washington … and others … was the temptation of a strong central government, through taxation, to “tap the largesse” … as they said back then … of one group of citizens for the benefit of others. The Obama administration’s recent claims about what great things he has done for our economy brought Pogo to mind. I was talking with a friend the other day about jobs and opportunities, and he said: in a quick two minutes what would you tell your grandkids? There are opportunities all over the place, I said. The business world is going through great change. Two things dominated the news as we rolled into the year 2013 – the fiscal cliff, and football bowl games. I listened and I kept hearing the historic words: “free food and the circus.” May I suggest this is the Christmas season, not just another holiday? I don’t recall people insisting we say Happy Holidays instead of Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Dr. James Allan Francis wrote an essay in 1926 –the year I was born – called One Solitary Life. May I give you my adaptation as a reminder of what Christmas is all about? This is the 71st anniversary of Pearl Harbor … that “day of infamy” in which Japan launched our entry into World War II, and in light of today’s situation in the middle East, it seems we would do well to remember that fateful December 7 in 1941. There is something special about an old fashioned Christmas … a warmth, a glow, a mellow time of fellowship and good cheer.
