Clarke County
While its 125 square miles makes Clarke County the smallest of Georgia’s 159 counties, it s home to a well known Georgia institution. The University of Georgia, the first chartered state-supported University, has called Athens/Clarke County home since 1785. While the university attracts thousands of students and draws in excited football fans in the fall, Clarke County has a lot more to offer.
The State Botanical Garden is located in Clarke County. Encompassing 313 acres it is a beautiful horticultural preserve full of plants and running/walking trails. Clarke county is home to the Georgia Museum of Art, the official state of art museum housing over 8,000 works.
The city of Winterville located seven miles from Athens is known as the “Marigold Capital of Georgia.” This small friendly town used to be known as a “wood and water station” for the Georgia railroad. One of the few doctor’s museums in the country, the Carter-coile Doctors museum is located in Winterville.
