Barrow County Economic Development
Location
The potential in Barrow County is unlimited as it sits in its Georgia's Golden Triangle. The county's close proximity to Atlanta, the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech brings together state-of-the-art research with local industry and land. The county is strategically located close to major Interstates 75, 285, 985, and 20, while Interstate 85 has an interchange in Barrow County at Georgia Route 211. With such easy access to I-85, Barrow County provides passage within one hour west to Atlanta and within 30 minutes east to Athens on Georgia Route 316.
Employers
Georgia's rapid population growth rate of 20 percent in the last decade is magnified in Barrow County, which has experienced a phenomenal growth rate of 38 percent. Barrow County's economic assets are enhanced by a spirit of progress that permeates the community. Services and retail trade each make up about 25% of the county's industry. Construction makes up another 15%, and manufacturing is approximately 10%.
The five largest companies in the county are Thrall Car Manufacturing, Chateau Elan Winery, Harrison Poultry, United Waste Services, and Johns Manville. Together, these five companies offer over 3,200 jobs to the area.
Tourism
Barrow's major tourist attraction, Chateau Elan Winery, is located just North of Winder on Interstate 85 and features four-star accommodations and dining, world class golf, a tennis complex and equestrian center. With its beautiful scenery and activities such as camping, fishing, swimming, miniature golf, and hiking, Fort Yargo State Park also attracts many visitors to the area.
Telecommunications
One telephone company, Alltel Georgia, serves the county. However, a number of long distance, Internet and cellular phone providers are offered in Barrow County.

Barrow County has several financial institutions, mainly located in Winder, including Bank of America, First Piedmont Bank, Georgia National Bank, Main Street Bank, People's Bank, Premier Bank, Regions Bank, and South Trust Bank.
